NON-REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTINGS SERIES - 2015-2017

In this Series, I explored improvisational techniques that became critical to all my work since. None of these techniques are new. Nonetheless, my layering approach is a style that I consider my own.

I began with layering paint, sand and dirt and sometimes adhered paper or fabric. At one point in my earlier adulthood, I took stone carving sculpture with a wonderful Art Teacher and Master of stone carving, Sonya Kraft. She once told me, “whatever you do, keep sculpting. You have a gift to see things in space, dimensionally.” Consequently, even my flat surface pieces have elements of three dimensionality. These works are in that milieu

Like sculpture, the layers of mixed media (paint, sand, dirt, etc.) work themselves into defined raised and upraised areas that are similar to bas relief. The marks and strike throughs are part of my approach, expressing visual voices so that the paintings are not silent even though they are.

The colors you see took time to create. They are intentionally unplanned. This takes a lot of self trust to do. My philosophy of “slowing down” helps me to not want a palette but let it happen. I thank you for viewing these non-representational works.
